Derrick Perry, a Marine veteran who pulled a gun on the man who stabbed and wounded 11 people last weekend at a Walmart in the Traverse City area, and is credited with helping prevent further harm, is being hailed as a hero by many, including The Iron Pig Smokehouse in Gaylord.

The restaurant, according to the Detroit Free Press, is offering Perry free BBQ meals for life.

"It was an amazing thing that those fellas did," Iron Pig Smokehouse owner Ian Murphy told the Free Press.

A viral video circulating online shows Perry confronting the suspect with a gun, along with several others. Perry can be heard yelling at Bradford James Gille, 42, of Afton in Northern Michigan, to put down the knife. They prevented Gille from doing more harm and held him until police arrived.

Perry and the others were hailed as heroes by the local sheriff.

Freep reporters Tresa Baldas and John Wisely write:

Deadstream Deli announced on Facebook that it would "love to offer" the gunman "a free meal on the house whenever it's convenient to take the scenic drive to Honor! Thank you for your bravery and quick actions in protecting the public!"

Roy's General Store in Traverse City is offering free fountain pop and coffee all week to CPL holders "as a thank-you for being prepared" and to honor those who stepped up "in the tragedy over at Walmart."
