On Tuesday, on a crisp, sunny fall day with temperatures mostly in the 50s, voters around the state headed to the polls — including in Detroit, where the mayor’s race is on the line.
Voters at Bethel AME Church on Antoine Street in Midtown Detroit, near I-75, told Deadline Detroit why they voted for City Council President Mary Sheffield for mayor or her opponent, Rev. Solomon Kinloch.
Some residents said they voted against Kinloch because they felt strongly about maintaining a separation between church and state. They also said Sheffield had more experience in government and would do a better job.
One voter said Kinloch should “stay in his lane,” while others said they were concerned about his “wishy-washy” stance during a debate about the National Guard being deployed to Detroit. Still, others felt he’d do a better job, with one person saying they believed his heart was more into the community than Sheffield’s.
Voters also talked about the need for better public transportation and reflected on Mayor Mike Duggan’s 12 years in office.
Below are some of the interviews. We did the best we could to filter out the wind that created some background noise.
