The Detroit City Council on Monday elected James Tate as its new president and Coleman A. Young II as mayor pro tem.

Tate, who replaces Mary Sheffield, defeated Scott Benson 5–4. In a separate vote, Young beat Mary Waters 5–4.

“My integrity is non-negotiable, and my dedication to this institution called Detroit City Council runs deep,” Tate said, according to Bridge Detroit. “I care about our residents and build genuine relationships throughout this entire city, and I believe that they deserve a council that can disagree without dividing, that can make progress without losing trust.”
