Mayor Sheffield talking to the press on Monday
Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield on Monday responded to the chaos and violence involving teen takeovers in parts of downtown Detroit over the weekend, saying, "we will not tolerate what we saw this weekend."
"I want to be very clear that while this administration is creating safe spaces and investing in prevention, we equally are promoting accountability and enforcement, and we will not tolerate violence," Sheffield said at a press conference.
Scores of teens converged on downtown Detroit on Saturday, and on Sunday night when a 14-year-old boy was shot and wounded.
WXYZ reported that two large groups of teens came together, a fight broke out around Library Street, off Grand River, and someone fired multiple shots.
Two teens were in custody, and the wounded victim was expected to recover.
"We will not tolerate what we saw this weekend, and we will continue to push for parental responsibility enforcement in our curfew," Sheffield said.
She emphasized that she'll continue to try to find ways to accommodate the need for teens to stay busy.
"It's not an either or," she said. "It's a both, and, and we believe that our approach will continue to yield the results we want to see."
"I think there's a large portion of young people who want to come down and just enjoy themselves. But you do have a group of individuals who come down and cause chaos and disruption. And those individuals will be held accountable. We have zero tolerance for disruptive and criminal behavior."
